Making his first appearance ever at CinemaCon, legendary director Steven Spielberg promised that none of the marketing for Disclosure Day would have anything from the third act in it. He explained that people these days see a single shot in a trailer and tuck that away in their memories. Then, watching the movie, they’re waiting for that moment. He doesn’t want that to happen for this new movie. “[This movie] needs to be experienced,” Spielberg said. “And all you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seat belt.”
That said, the filmmaker then screened an extended trailer for the film that had what we thought was a lot of big reveals in it. But, apparently, there are many more. Below, we’ll talk about what we saw in the footage, which was revealing, but definitely made us even more excited for it.
The footage begins with a few shots from the previous trailers. Emily Blunt’s character watches as a cardinal lands on her kitchen table. She shows up to work and speaks an alien language. Josh O’Connor’s character shows his sister disturbing footage that really messes her up. He also shows his sister footage of Blunt’s character speaking this language and says that he can understand it. To him, it’s math, and he can even write it.
We see Colin Firth’s character walking into a massive room filled with monitors, and they’re discussing Blunt’s language. Apparently, it’s a match to a sample his company has in its archives.
We see Blunt later with her husband, played by Wyatt Russell, and they both look scared. He asks her where she wants to go, and she says north, because that’s where O’Connor’s character is. She then calls him, and we hear part of the conversation. She explains that she doesn’t know who he is, but she knows that people are after him and trying to kill him. She tells him not to go back to the house. He does, though, by driving a car through it to save his sister, and then gets chased.
Later, O’Connor’s character is in some kind of doctor’s office, and Blunt walks in. “I know you,” she says. “I know you too,” he replies. We then see two little kids with tiny alien fingers running up their heads in a bright, white room. There’s also some kind of structure above them. “It’s the two of you,” Colman Domingo’s character says. “It’s always been the two of you.” Apparently, O’Connor and Blunt are the kids who had some kind of alien experience as children that they don’t remember. They hold hands and promise not to let go.
There are shots of a few more action scenes, such as a car being stuck under a train, and a shot that looks like it’s taken from inside a fighter jet. Then, in the final shot, we see Blunt’s character looking into the eyes of a deer. The camera zooms into the deer’s eye and slowly moves across its head. Once it gets to the other eye, we see that it’s no longer a deer, it’s an alien, and it’s looking at the child version of Blunt’s character.
What the hell did we just watch? We’re not sure yet, but as Spielberg said—we’re strapped in to see more already.
Disclosure Day opens in theaters on June 12.
