Sigourney Weaver Wishes There Was More ‘Galaxy Quest,’ But There Probably Won’t Be

Reading time 2 minutes

In a career retrospective interview with Vanity Fair, the iconic Sigourney Weaver revealed that while there were once hopes for more Galaxy Quest featuring its original cast, that’s now unlikely to happen. “I’ve been so fortunate to work with these great ensembles, Tony Shalhoub and Alan Rickman. I mean, it was just an amazing group,” she reminisced about the experience.

DreamWorks does have a long-gestating, in-development spin-off series currently stationed at Paramount+, but an actual movie sequel seemingly isn’t on the table.

Still, about any involvement with a Galaxy Quest return, Weaver offered, “I wish they’d put out a director’s cut of the movie because at the last minute, DreamWorks decided to release the movie with some of the more sophisticated scenes cut that Alan was in—because it needed a kids’ movie to go up against Stuart Little.”

She hopes the studio might consider releasing a director’s cut to honor Rickman’s original performance “with more of his very, very strange and wonderful scenes.” Fans of the actor can only imagine how unrated they must have been if they weren’t included in the released deleted scenes. Release the Rickman cut, DreamWorks!

The iconic mother of sci-fi also discussed how returning to the franchise was once the plan, but Galaxy Quest’s screenwriter was apprehensive. Weaver shared, “I remember Bob Gordon had written a second one, and he wouldn’t give it to DreamWorks because he just felt they’d missed the boat on ours. And so we always meant to do a sequel.”

Even as the cast for years expressed interest, Rickman’s loss was so deeply felt by the ensemble that the actress concluded that it is now unlikely to happen without him: “With Alan passing away, we just lost heart.”
