‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Has a Big Post-Thanksgiving Open

Reading time 1 minute

Normally, there’s a bit of a slump in theaters after Thanksgiving’s come and gone. That wasn’t the case this year, where Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Zootopia 2 made big bucks en route to year’s end.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse’s horror sequel netted $109 million worldwide, with $63 million of it coming from North America. The domestic take is the biggest ever for a post-turkey day weekend and another success for the studio following Black Phone 2’s opening salvo back in October. It’s also the second-best domestic opening for a horror movie this year behind The Conjuring: Last Rites, and the second-best domestic start for a December movie since Scream 2.

While behind the $80 million open of the first Freddy’s and getting much harsher reviews, the sequel proves the franchise has still got it. Bringing back much of the first film’s cast, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has had a lot of marketing behind it, and its fanbase has been chomping at the bit to see it. Audience reactions are fairly positive on it, and Blumhouse is probably more than ready to greenlight a third installment.

Meanwhile, Zootopia 2’s still on the path to make $1 billion, with its worldwide total now $915 million in its second weekend. It’s especially big over in China, and its $12.3 million debut in Japan made for the second-biggest Hollywood debut in the country behind Frozen 2. When it crosses the billion mark, it’ll be the third film in 2025 to cross that benchmark behind Ne Zha 2 ($2.2 billion) and the Lilo & Stitch remake ($1.038 billion), and the second Hollywood flick after Lilo.
