It’s been over a decade since the Muppets were on the silver screen, and in the time since, Disney’s handling of the esteemed puppet franchise has led to, at best, some mixed results. But with all eyes on some special anniversaries for the series, it looks like the House of Mouse may have big plans for the gang’s most prolific, glamorous star.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Las Culturistas podcast, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she has teamed up with Emma Stone to produce a movie starring The Muppets‘ premiere dramatic queen, Miss Piggy. Lawrence didn’t reveal further plot details but noted that Oh Mary! scribe (and incoming One Piece star) Cole Escola was working on the script.
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just going to,” Lawrence said, after recounting a story of how she’d almost starred as Mary Todd Lincoln in a run of Escola’s smash-hit Broadway play. “Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie, and Cole [Escola] is writing it.”
io9 has reached out to Disney for comment on the apparent plans for a Miss Piggy feature, and will update this post if we hear more.
The Muppets last hit the big screen in 2014’s The Muppets Most Wanted, and have largely since been pivoted between various TV and streaming series, as well as one-off specials. But with the broader franchise celebrating its 70th anniversary this year since their first appearance on Sam and Friends, and next year’s 50th anniversary of The Muppets show, it seems like Disney is trying to make another push into supporting the series again.
Back in September it was reported that Seth Rogen was developing a limited revival of The Muppet Show to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year with pop star Sabrina Carpenter, and more recently at Disney’s Walt Disney World resort, after the shuttering of Muppet*Vision 3D, the franchise took over the overlay for the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at the park.
