Mozilla Firefox logo Mozilla heeft versie 153 van zijn webbrowser Firefox uitgebracht. In deze uitgave is onder meer ondersteuning voor het afspelen van hdr-video's toegevoegd, kunnen bepaalde pagina's in containers worden gedraaid, zodat de tracking en cookies gescheiden blijven, en is het mogelijk om pdf-documenten samen te voegen. New
  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) video playback is now available on Windows - this feature needs HDR mode enabled for the display in Windows Settings - Display. Laptop displays that only offer "HDR video streaming" are not supported at this time. Some videos recorded on phones in certain orientations are currently not shown as HDR.
  • Containers let you keep separate parts of your online life (work, shopping, personal, banking) logged into different accounts in the same browser window, but keep your cookies and ad tracking isolated inside each container.
  • Share any open page with a QR code. Right-click a tab, select Share > Generate QR Code. Great for posters, invitations, banners, and other printed materials.
  • It is now possible to merge multiple PDFs by dragging a PDF into the PDF sidebar.
  • It is now possible to add images as new pages within PDFs using the Firefox PDF editor.
  • Quickly pick and copy a color from any page by typing "pick color", "color picker", or "eyedropper" in the address bar and selecting the "Pick a color" quick action.
  • Added support for Apple's system-wide full-screen keyboard command (Globe-F).
  • Firefox now verifies and displays Qualified Website Authentication Certificates (QWACs) in accordance with eIDAS regulations.
  • Added improved support for videos with overlays so users can more easily access video actions from context menus.
  • Firefox now highlights the location permission icon in red whenever a website has access to your location. The permission icon is also now visible on search results pages where it was previously hidden.
  • Smart Window:
    • See and choose AI models directly from the Smart Window assistant.
    • New Tab now includes a familiar address bar for typing websites and searching the web.
Firefox Labs
  • Firefox Labs can now be opened quickly by typing "labs" or "experiment" in the address bar and selecting the Open Firefox Labs quick action.
  • Firefox now offers experimental support for the new JPEG XL image format, which generally provides better compression than WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF and is designed to supersede them. You can enable it from the Firefox Labs panel in Settings.
Fixed Changed
  • Extensions can no longer access local files by default. Users can grant or revoke this access via the new "Access local files on your computer" permission, separate from "Access your data for all websites".
  • Local Network Access restrictions are now enabled by default for all users. Firefox requires websites to request permission before connecting to devices on your local network or to apps and services on your device.
  • Outdated cookie settings have been removed from the Settings UI. Users still in that mode should switch to default behavior "Isolate cross-site cookies". More information

  • A new "Local Mode" setting in the options panel allows developers to load local directories via custom origins. This simplifies testing for APIs that do not function over standard file:// URLs, removing the need to run a local web server. Multiple directory mappings are supported.
Web Platform
  • Firefox now supports a limited subset of the non-standard ::-webkit-scrollbar pseudo-element to improve web compatibility:
  • Rules with non-zero width/height disable overlay scrollbars for the affected container.
  • display: none on ::-webkit-scrollbar behaves like scrollbar-width: none, hiding the scrollbar.
  • @supports selector(::-webkit-scrollbar) now evaluates to true.
  • Full styling capabilities (colors, border-radius, etc.) are intentionally not supported.
  • The vertical-align property was converted into a shorthand for baseline-source, alignment-baseline, and baseline-shift in Firefox 149. Now, alignment-baseline supports the new keywords alphabetic, ideographic, central, mathematical, and hanging, extending the variety of baselines to choose for alignment.
  • Implemented the new popover=hint spec, which removes a series of inconsistent and unexpected behaviors.
  • The circle() and ellipse() functions accept two new keywords closest-corner and farthest-corner for their radial size.
  • The newly added Error.stackTraceLimit property allows to set the maximal depth of the captured JavaScript error stack as a performance optimization.
  • Developers can now use the text import attribute to import text files using the module system.
  • The Picture In Picture API exposes a way for web developers to make use of user agent Picture-In-Picture functionality.
  • The Intl.LocaleInfo proposal adds the ability to query Locale information, such as week data (first day in a week, weekend start day, weekend end day), text direction and hour cycle used in the Locale

"various security fixes" -> 18 HIGH patches... Wellicht is dit Mythos, want normaal waren het maar een handjevol per release.

AI modellen zullen vast wat toevoegen, maar het is in dit geval niet exorbitant meer. Ze zullen ook meer oplossen voordat ze het uitbrengen. (met nieuwe code)
Twee High Security patches zijn aangedragen door OpenAI, van de andere high patches, zie ik niet direct een link met Mythos.
Een paar versies geleden waren het er toch 157, omdat Mozilla Early Access kreeg van Anthropic.
En nu maar hopen dat de boeven er niet 19 hadden gevonden }>
Hmm, nou krijg ik er op mn homescreen opeens weer Widgets bij. Zucht.

Gelukkig met een setting uit te zetten.
Net even opgezocht:

about:config -> browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.widgets.enabled (toggle naar false)
Ik vind ze juist wel chill. Vond het altijd zonde dat het zo een lege ruimte was.

Huh? Dat hebben we toch al een jaar of 3?
Ik gok dat de feature nu ook in de UI zit. Terwijl vroeger alleen "de acherkant" (het scheiden van cookies verhaal etc etc) in de "core" browser zat en vervolgens alles in de "Multi-Account containers" zat v.w.b. de UI. Nu zit dus een deel in Firefox ingebakken, en een deel nog in de browser extensie (zoals het gebruik van een VPN of proxy gekoppeld aan de container: aka "voor alle tabs in container X gebruik Mozilla VPN / proxy Y", en blijkbaar ook de "open deze site altijd in deze container" die nog steeds alleen in de extensie zit).

Dus zoals in de link staat:

De extensie heeft nog voordelen, maar buiten de genoemde features zal de rest nu native in de browser zitten.
Ik gebruik multi-containers al jaren, maar vind het inmiddels erg onoverzichtelijk voor eindgebruikers (ook voor mij). En zo duidelijk zijn die artikelen erover helemaal niet. Ze zijn ook te lang.

Feitelijk zijn er nu 3 container tools/extensies in Firefox: Firefox Containers, multi-account containers en de Facebook container. Dat is niet meer uit te leggen en lijkt me geen toekomstvaste oplossing. Het moet snel een logisch geheel worden, of anders iets van 'standaard' en 'uitgebreid', waarbij de laatste heel goed en extensie kan zijn.

Ik ga zodra ik de tijd vind maar eens 153.0 op een schoon systeem zetten, want ik ben het spoor bijster. Ik heb Multi-Account Containers ook vanaf het begin. Zou handig kunnen zijn als je meerdere accounts hebt op een host en zowel een admin tabje als een gewone subscriber open wilt hebben. Maar ik krijg het nooit echt betrouwbaar.
Toen ik wisselde van Edge naar FF miste ik wel HDR. Ben blij te zien dat ze dat nu hebben toegevoegd.

... helaas inmiddels wel gewisseld naar Linux dus voor dat OS zal ik nog wel even moeten wachten.
Windows krijgt dit soort dingen altijd, of in ieder geval bijna altijd als eerste en dan pas Linux.

Met deze Engelse termen in de address bar gebeurt er niets, maar met het Nederlandse "kleur" lukt het wel.
Ik gebruik al een tijdje LibreWolf (ook gebaseerd op Firefox).
Dit is namelijk een soort 'gemodde' Firefox waarbij allelei zaken, zoals telemetry, e.d., verwijderd of standaard uitgeschakeld zijn.
Verder is ook uBlock Origin, voor de 'eenvoud' reeds bijgevoegd, en volgt LibreWolf alle updates en/of bug fixes bij Firefox op de voet... ;)

... en elke website die @supports not (::-webkit-scrollbar) gebruiktte als onderdeel van een strategie om de scrollbar-* properties uit de CSS standards-track enkel te gebruiken in Firefox en niet in Chrome/ium, om zo te garanderen dat die laatste de veel rijkere mogelijkheden van ::-webkit-scrollbar bleef gebruiken, is nu de bok.

Voor deze sites renderen scrollbars in Firefox nu als de standaard OS scrollbar. Want ineens ondersteunt Firefox nu 'wel' de webkit-specifieke smaak (behalve dat ze dat niet echt doen, natuurlijk) waardoor het blok binnen die @supports conditie, de standaard scrollbar-* properties niet meer zet.

Dag thema kleuren. Dag mogelijkheid om een 'thin' stijl te zetten. Hallo, superlelijke niet bij het design voegende standaard OS scrollbar.

Mozilla breekt hiermee gewoon het web.
Dat klinkt vooral als een fout van ontwikkelaars. Waarom is je test om te controleren dat feature A wordt ondersteund de vraag "is feature B niet ondersteund"? Dat is gewoon niet waar @support voor bedoelt is en was sowieso al "misbruik" maken van de functionaliteit hiervan. Dat dit op een gegeven moment ooit zou breken zou voor niemand een verassing moeten zijn.
Omdat je geen keuze krijgt in deze. Chrome/ium is zo gemaakt dat deze zodra de scrollbar-* properties gezet worden, de styles die bij ::-webkit-scrollbar horen, negeert. Dat kun je Chromium niet verwijten. Dat is de standaard te volgen procedure die binnen de CSS working groups waar de browser-bouwers zetel in hebben, afgesproken is: de standards-track properties vervangen de vendor-specifieke implementatie.

In dit geval is de standards-track versie om scrollbars te stylen, echter erbarmelijk slecht en ontoereikend.
Had je graag een scroll thumb met afgeronde hoekjes? Kan niet.
Had je graag je scrollbar een klein beetje naar binnen willen duwen bijv. omdat je aan de linker/rechter-rand een gradient met fade-out hebt? Kan niet.

De oude webkit implementatie is simpelweg aan alle kanten beter. Maar om die laatste in gebruik te laten moet je dus een negatieve supports-clausule inzetten wanneer je de standards-track scrollbar-width en scrollbar-color gebruikt om Firefox te plezieren, omdat anders zodra die properties gezet worden, de oude webkit implementatie er - zoals volgens de standaardprocedures is afgesproken - totaal mee kapt.

Mozilla zit hier gewoon fout.
Of ze hadden all-in moeten gaan en ::-webkit-scrollbar in het geheel moeten implementeren.
Of ze hadden het moeten laten voor wat het was.

En op z'n minst hadden ze een manier moeten hebben waarmee de auteur van een site dit gedrag opt-in kon sturen. En die hebben ze niet.
In plaats daarvan hebben ze een about:config sleutel die manueel door hen beheerd wordt waar 'problematische' sites (lees: die niet met hun hack compatible zijn) opgeschoven worden.
Dat is layout.css.fake-webkit-scrollbar.disabled-domains die standaard op het moment ingesteld staat op discord.com,shitposter.world.

FAAL. Punt.

(Het feit alleen al dat die optie fake-webkit-scrollbar heet...)
