Viggo Mortensen fans knew this was coming: Aragorn has indeed been recast in Andy Serkis’ J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and now we know who’ll be inheriting the smolder and stepping into those heroic riding boots. It’s Jamie Dornan (Belfast)!

The news was confirmed at CinemaCon tonight, with a teaser that also lists off the rest of the main casting for the upcoming film:

Andy Serkis, who also directs, stars as Gollum and Sméagol; Ian McKellen returns as Galdalf along with Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins and Lee Pace as Thranduil; and then there’s Dornan as Strider, a.k.a. Aragorn. Also in the cast, playing characters we’re not immediately familiar with: Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters December 17, 2027, which means we’ve only just begun to learn details about this one. Are you excited to see Dornan as Aragorn?
