We Just Saw Behind the Scenes on ‘Godzilla Minus Zero,’ and It’s Bigger and Darker Than Ever

Reading time 2 minutes

Godzilla is coming to America, both in theaters and on the big screen. At CinemaCon 2026, director Takashi Yamazaki took the stage and showed the first teaser from his highly anticipated new film, Godzilla Minus Zero, as well as behind-the-scenes footage and a few glimpses of what’s to come. And that teaser ends with a shot of Godzilla standing besides the Statue of Liberty.

Godzilla Minus Zero takes place two years after 2023’s Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One and follows the continued struggles of the Shikishima family. In the footage, we couldn’t tell exactly what those struggles were, but there were shots of lots of rubble, people shooting in the streets, a film crew carrying a large warhead, soldiers leaving a white home, a little girl crying, and lots of planes with greenscreen behind them.

This is all filmed for IMAX, which Yamazaki claimed would be the first time for a Japanese production. He said it was the best way to truly capture “an even deeper despair that will descend on Japan and the family.”

“The journey from minus to zero will not be an easy one,” Yamazaki said of his story, but he promised that from the despair will come hope and resolve.

But what exactly is that despair? Does it once again come from Godzilla? Or is there something even more terrible out there? Yamazaki was specific that they didn’t want to reveal much, but the one shot of Godzilla standing alongside the Statue of Liberty certainly makes it seem as if this time, Japan’s issues aren’t just its own.

We’ll have much, much more on Godzilla Minus Zero, including that teaser trailer, soon. It opens in theaters, including IMAX, on November 6. “Godzilla becomes Godzilla when experienced in a theater,” Yamazaki said.
