As Hollywood tries to make a franchise out of the Project Hail Mary movie, the original novel is getting the manga treatment.
Hayakawa Publishing announced the adaptation last week, but recently showed off a teaser image featuring Ryland Grace encountering Rocky for the first time. The manga will be helmed by newcomer mangaka Hajime Go, whose sample art got a seal of approval from novelist Andy Weir. No word yet on a release window, but its existence underlines how much of a “social phenomenon,” in Hayakawa’s words, that the Ryan Gosling-led film has become in such a short time.

That shows in the box office: per the Hollywood Reporter, Project Hail Mary is holding strong in its second weekend. Its domestic take is $54.5 million (down 32% from last week), and combined with the international haul of $136.2 million, the total box office is $300.8 million. Legs, it certainly has, becoming the highest-grossing Amazon picture since Creed 3 took $276 million worldwide in 2023. THR also highlighted its overseas success, where sci-fi movies can sometimes be a hard sell.
While this weekend’s big movie They Will Kill You couldn’t hold against Hail Mary, a fellow sci-fi competitor comes on Wednesday with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Reviews for that aren’t up yet, but it’s Mario and for kids, so it’s going to do well—and that’s without touching on its steps toward making a Nintendo cinematic universe.
