The First Proper ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Trailer Is a ’90s Anime Fever Dream

Reading time 1 minute

Ever since Science Saru announced its intentions to remake Ghost in the Shell, the studio’s given vague teases at what that new version would look like. If you’ve been waiting to see what the landmark series would look like in Saru and Production I.G’s direction, wait no further: it’s here, and it looks pretty good. Emphasis on “pretty.”

While still much too short for our liking at only 46 seconds, this new look from AnimeJapan makes a compelling case for the series’ arrival this summer. There’s a distinct 90s vibe throughout the preview, which is partially owed to Shuhei Handa’s character designs and its use of color. (That final shot of Kusanagi’s red eyes contrasted with her blue hair? Mwah, beautiful, yes, please.) Its aesthetic leans more cartoony than prior adaptions, but with the tradeoff of leaning more toward the artwork of the original manga.

Along with the preview above, Science Saru came to AnimeJapan with a new key visual from Handa featuring Motoko Kusanagi on top of the AI tank Fuchikoma. At time of writing, it’s unclear whether The Ghost in the Shell is a straight adaptation or something more like a retelling, a la Trigun Stampede. Luckily, we don’t have to wait that long to find out—it’s coming out this July, which means we’ll be seeing and hearing more about it in the coming months.

Update (3/28/2026 @ 9:22 AM ET): This story has been updated to clarify that Ghost was created by Masamune Shirow, and we regret the error.
