Stranger Things came to an end, for good or ill, at the start of this year. But chop chop, Netflix needs butts in seats streaming, and KPop Demon Hunters 2 is probably not hitting this side of the decade. So it’s back to Hawkins with you!
This morning, the streamer dropped a new trailer for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, its interquel animated series that takes us back to that midway point of the main series, in a way where everything can last forever and you only have to slightly worry about pesky kids growing up in the time it takes you to make more.
Set between seasons two and three, Tales from ’85 follows the main gang as they begin to relax, thinking the Upside Down is in the past after they sealed it off, preparing for a winter of less-lethal adventures. But of course, that wouldn’t make for a good show, so of course beneath the snow that’s blanketing the town, something sinister lurks: creatures from the Upside Down threatening chaos again, despite the fact they very much shouldn’t be here.
It’s all very Stranger Things in style, and that’s the key thing this trailer wants to drive home, what with lines like “I guess I’d like the idea of another adventure, you know?” and “I thought this Upside Down stuff was over!” The show must go on, after all.
And although it is going on, it’s not with familiar voices. Pretty much anyone who’s anyone from the live-action series has been recast for Tales From ’85, which will star all-new kid actors: Luca Diaz as Mike, Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Elisha Williams as Lucas, Ben Plessala as Will, and Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max. The series will introduce a new kid in the mix too, who has a more prominent role throughout this trailer, Nikki Baxter, played by Odessa A’zion.
But how soon is too soon for a return to Stranger Things? Netflix will start testing the waters when Tales from ’85 hits the streamer starting April 23—alongside a theatrical debut of its opening episodes.
