As Doctor Who fans wait to learn more about its future—no longer a Disney co-production, definitely getting a Christmas special, no idea about future seasons, and no clue if Billie Piper is playing the next Doctor—the BBC series has announced a new addition to its Big Finish Productions audio adventures. And it’ll star the closest thing the show has to comfort food: David Tennant.
During his run as the Tenth Doctor, Tennant created what may be the most popular Time Lord to ever emerge from the TARDIS. That goodwill came in handy when Doctor Who needed a special hook for its trio of 60th-anniversary specials—which also marked the kickoff of the BBC’s production partnership with Disney. Tennant tapped back in at the end of his Broadchurch co-star Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Thirteenth Doctor, playing a new version of the character who very much resembled the Tenth Doctor.
The Fourteenth Doctor hasn’t technically departed the show; he and Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor had an unusual “bi-generation” at the end of the third special. And we may yet see him again in Russell T. Davies’ upcoming holiday episode—the only Doctor Who coming to TV while the show figures out its future in the wake of its split with Disney last year (unless Disney+ ever decides to let stateside fans watch that spinoff series, that is).
However, Big Finish is swooping in with more Tennant for the masses, back in his sneakers as the Tenth Doctor. The company has announced 15 new hour-long, full-cast audio adventures.
“Big Finish makes it dangerously easy—you turn up, have a lovely time, and suddenly you’ve saved the universe again,” Tennant said as part of the announcement.
Nicholas Briggs, the company’s creative director, teased “a rollercoaster ride during these new adventures. They’re fast, funny, scary audio dramas with surprises from the very first episode.”
The first 12 episodes will be released bimonthly starting in summer 2027, and there will also be a three-episode set (release date TBD) in which “the Tenth Doctor teams up with some of his other incarnations.”
