The 10-year anniversary of Voltron: Legendary Defender is coming up, and to mark the occasion, Dreamworks is bringing the series to physical media.
You could buy earlier seasons on DVD back in the day, but this new $50 collection that ships out on March 31 stands as “the only way to have all eight seasons in one place.” There’s no mention of any special features on the store page, and at time of writing, it’s unclear if that’ll change. Either way, it’s good that the show even gets to come back at all: Netflix delisted it in 2024, and the only way to watch it was through ahem, different means.
At least this way, it gets a little extra shot at life. Voltron: Legendary Defender was generally considered pretty good until around its fourth or fifth season. By that point, the show had taken some narrative stumbles and messily handled character turns that lost it a lot of goodwill before its finale sank the whole thing. It’s often remembered with disdain or in bewilderment at how its fanbase got increasingly out of pocket, but maybe it’s gotten marginally better with age?
Truthfully, the best thing about Voltron getting the physical treatment is that it opens the door for some other Netflix shows to get the same treatment. Dreamworks’ She-Ra reboot got pulled from the streamer last month, and it’d be nice if it got to come to DVD as well. And while we’re at it, do the same thing with Masters of the Universe: Revelation—since we’re getting new Voltron and He-Man movies in the near future, might as well have their current cartoons availble to compare against their future live-action counterparts.
