Netflix Has a Great Looking New Shark-Based Weather Disaster Movie

Reading time 2 minutes

You’ve seen sharks in the sea, and you’ve seen sharks in tornadoes, but have you ever seen sharks in your living room? That’s what happens in Thrash, the new Netflix movie from Violent Night director Tommy Wirkola, which just released its first trailer.

In the film, a massive hurricane creates devastating flooding in a coastal town. So much flooding, in fact, that the sharks from the sea make it onto the streets, into the homes, and more. The film stars Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor, Gossip Girl’s Whitney Peak, and Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Djimon Hounsou. Check out the trailer.

Now, if this whole thing looks and sounds familiar, give yourself a gold star. Back in 2024, Sony was planning on releasing this film with the title Beneath the Storm. Since then, its release date, title, and distributor have changed a few times. Now, finally, the film will land on Netflix on April 10 as Thrash.

Thrash also brings to mind visions of 2019’s Crawl, directed by Alexandre Aja. That film also saw a scary animal terrorize a small town, only those were alligators instead of sharks. That felt more plausible, however, as alligators are more commonly seen on land. The only time you see sharks on land is in an aquarium or in a movie theater.

In our mind, the key to this movie will be if it hits that right balance of “Yes, we know this is ridiculous; go with it” as well as “If you look deeper, we’re also saying something here.” Because while hurricanes causing floods that allow sharks to try and eat pregnant women in cars is pretty out there, hurricanes causing floods that kill people is not out there at all. In fact, it’s way more common than anyone would like. And, if Wirkola’s film can shine a tiny light on that while also making us laugh, cheer, and scream, maybe he’s got something.

We’ll find out on April 10 when Thrash hits Netflix.
