Earlier this week, Chainsaw Man fans were in a panic, concocting fan theories over whether Tatsuki Fujimoto‘s manga was, in fact, ending. Turns out it’s true: the series is coming to an end.
Responding to an inquiry from io9, a VIZ Media public relations representative provided a statement, writing, “The Shonen Jump team have confirmed Chainsaw Man is ending but details are yet to be confirmed.”
This comment follows some confusion about the series’ status, as Shonen Jump and Manga Plus’s translations of Chainsaw Man chapter 231 conflicted on a final footnote on the last page of the release. When the chapter was released on March 10th, Manga Plus’s translation of its final page ended with, “Final chapter coming 3/24.” It was later changed to “To be continued,” which fans say Shonen Jump also updated its kicker to.

The confusion over Chainsaw Man‘s ending hit the internet like wildfire, with fans divided over whether it was actually coming to an end or if the series was ramping up toward a Chainsaw Man part 3. Fans in the camp that the series is actually coming to an end pointed to Fujimoto’s fascination with The Big Lebowski and how it left viewers without any sense of resolution, no less impactful. Those with their feet dug in on CSM part three hopium drew parallels to how this announcement mirrors Chainsaw Man‘s conclusion, which led to the dual announcement of a third arc in the series.
Regardless, anyone reading the manga can see that it has been gearing towards a conclusion for roughly three months now. After all, the dust has settled on the climactic battle between its perpetually down bad protagonist, Denji, and CSM Part 2’s antagonist, Yoru. On top of that, Pochita made his return to basically reach out beyond CSM‘s pages, telling Denji and fans that it might not be a bad thing that the series is coming to an end.
While the Shonen Jump team’s statement that “details are yet to be confirmed” can give fans in the latter fan-theory camp some hope that the manga will continue in some form, as things stand, the manga is coming to an end. How that end will come will remain to be seen on March 24, but in the meantime, fans can look forward to Mappa’s season two anime adaptation currently in production—and Chainsaw Man dub star Ryan Colt Levy already has a message for fans feeling morose:

Whatever Fujimoto works on next, it’s going to have a lot of excellent work to live up to.
