After a time where it felt like getting new Rick and Morty episodes was akin to a gold rush, the show’s entered a pretty comfortable pace entering its ninth season—now arriving a year on from our last zany adventures with the titular team-up. But it’s not just consistency the show is promising for its return—but good old-fashioned, human-made slop.
“Rick and Morty is back, baby! Season Nine is all certified bangers,” the official synopsis for the new season reads in part. “No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.”
There’s definitely a lot of substances in Rick and Morty’s cross-dimensional shenanigans you could describe as slop, but at least it’s nice to see the show coming out swinging against the artificial kind. It’s not only the synopsis being irreverent this time around, either.
“I know it’s my job to say that this show just keeps topping itself, but it also has the benefit of being true,” Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen said in an accompanying press release. “It’s kind of scary what this show unit is doing season over season—just pouring an absurd amount of talent and brilliance into these episodes. From the first frame, you’re going to see great high‑concept insanity with some of the best character writing ever done. Again, it’s my job to say that, but it’s also true.”
Season 9 of Rick and Morty will debut on Adult Swim on May 24, with episodes becoming available for purchase digitally the day after broadcast. The whole season will start streaming in the US from August 31, and the show’s first spinoff, President Curtis, is still expected to broadcast later this year.
