Do you still have strong memories of 1986’s Transformers: The Movie? Does it still make you sad or piss you off that it not only wasn’t all that good but killed off a lot of key characters, and Optimus Prime in particular? Well, Hasbro has held onto all your negativity and is finally in a place to say what you’ve wanted to hear all along: “We’re sorry.”
“To all the loyal fans, we hear you, and we feel your pain,” says Hasbro. To make up for “making you cry at the movies 40 years ago,” the company’s going on an apology tour that also involves you paying to accept said apology.
The tour includes screenings of the movie, new music, and special fan events. And of course, there are the toys: a $125 replica of the Matrix of Leadership to make you feel like Hot Rod and a new set of Studio Series figures. The Snarl and Astrotrain figures will cost you $60 each; Skywarp and Shockwave are $43; and Sunstreaker, Kranix, and Wheeljack are $28.
Transformers: The Movie came out in August 1986 and was the franchise’s first movie. Beyond the aforementioned bloodbath, which was dictated by Hasbro to sell new toys, one of the film’s big claims to fame is Stan Bush’s “The Touch” playing throughout. In the years since it came out, the movie has been reexamined as a cult classic that’s beloved for its bleakness while also considered better than its various cinematic successors.
Hasbro hasn’t yet shared specific dates for the movie’s re-release, but it’ll reveal more about the toys on Sunday, February 15. Pre-orders for those toys will go live Monday, February 16, and Tuesday, February 17, with more reveals planned later in the year.
