All these years after it ended—and with two spinoffs under its belt with potentially more to come—the fallout of the ending to Game of Thrones still lingers over Westeros. It’s not been helped by the fact that fans have latched onto the fact that issues with the show, and then the first spinoff, House of the Dragon, started to show when they deviated from A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin’s source material. But now that a new (and great!) series in the universe is here, it’s still got fans worrying that it could all happen again.
That’s especially the case considering that the show in question—Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—doesn’t have a lot of source material to draw on. Just three Hedge Knight novellas exist so far, and with a second season adapting the second of them already in production, should Knight continue (and we sincerely hope it does, based on the strength of season one) beyond a third season, it could face the same pitfalls both Thrones and House of the Dragon have fallen into. Especially the latter, which led to a very messy and public falling out between Martin and House showrunner Ryan Condal.
But Knight showrunner Ira Parker isn’t too concerned about that ever happening. Not just because he’s got at least some ideas of what Martin wants for Dunk and Egg’s future beyond their current stories (if he ever gets time to write them in a post-Winds of Winter world, that is), but because he’s keen on keeping Martin on his good side.
“Look, in some ways, we know a lot more about what happens after these three novellas because of all the supporting material (you like how I referred to [A Song of Ice and Fire] as supporting material for [Dunk and Egg]), and so there’s less inherent danger,” Parker said in a Reddit AMA this week. “Not no danger, just less… Anything beyond book 3 (if we could ever be so wonderfully lucky) would highly involve George.”
Parker had previously already revealed that Martin had shared with him potential plots he had in mind for Dunk and Egg’s adventures (and ASOIAF lore-heads already know, thanks to the lore bible World of Ice and Fire, where their stories eventually go), so it’s not too surprising that he has ideas in mind should Knight of the Seven Kingdoms get to continue for a few more seasons, especially given the warm reception to it. But at least there’s an awareness of what the show would need to do to keep things from turning south… if only because we’ve already had plenty enough evidence of that happening before already.
