The Scripts for David Lynch’s Never-Made Netflix Pitch May Soon Be Published

Reading time 1 minute

It’s been over a year, and fans are still grieving the monumental loss of David Lynch. But there’s a spark of hope that we may get to dive into one of the legendary creator’s most mysterious unrealized projects: Unrecorded Night, which was once in consideration at Netflix but was later set aside amid the pandemic and then never picked back up.

World of Reel directs us to a Reddit post attributed to Jennifer Lynch, David’s daughter and a director in her own right.

“Unrecorded Night scripts are likely to be published by myself and my siblings as a way to offer what could not be realized, to those who would have loved it,” she wrote. “I beg everyone to wait for this release and not hunt down what will likely be unauthorized versions and would soil the beautiful work Dad created. Like many millions of people, we are great fans of our father’s work, and wish to see it shared and celebrated in every good way. We know there is a wanting, and we feel the need to fulfill Dad’s gifts as best as possible.”

A Reddit user added an additional reply, noting, “Someone asked [longtime David Lynch producer] Sabrina Sutherland the same question at the BFI Lost Highway screening last night [January 15], and she said the same thing.”

This is very exciting news. Even if Unrecorded Night never made it to the screen, it feels like a fitting tribute to have Lynch’s family and close collaborators in agreement on publishing the scripts. It’s also bittersweet, but we’ll be looking forward to reading them and imagining what could have been.
