‘Inception’ and ‘The Incredibles’ Among 2025’s National Film Registry Inductees

Reading time 1 minute

Genre films like Inception, The Incredibles, and The Thing are so good, they’ve been preserved in the National Film Registry.

Like previous years, the Library of Congress selected the 25 titles for 2025 based on “their cultural, historic, or aesthetic importance.” For example, Inception—the first Nolan movie to get added to the Registry—was described by the Library as “a meditation on how dreams influence identity, and it resonates deeply in an age of digital simulation, blurred realities, and uncertainty.” Meanwhile, The Incredibles was noted for being Pixar’s first film with an outside director and its multimedia legacy that includes video games, merchandise, and what’ll soon be two sequels.

The list of newly added films (which you can see below) ranges from old silent films in the late 1800s to blockbusters spanning the last several decades, with the most recent addition being 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. Across the entire list, other notable genre flicks include The Wizard of Oz, the Looney Tunes short What’s Opera, Doc?, Night of the Living Dead, and Blade Runner.
