A third movie has just joined 2025’s billion-dollar club: Zootopia 2. On the worldwide box office rankings for this year, it’s currently nipping at the heels of the live-action Lilo & Stitch, though it’s still a ways behind the clear number one, Chinese animation sensation Ne Zha II.
While America’s top movie of the year may well end up being A Minecraft Movie, the global chart tells a different tale. And just reaching a billion dollars isn’t Zootopia 2‘s only boasting point. The animated sequel following the adventures of animal detectives Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde hit the big milestone after just 17 days in release; according to a Walt Disney Animation Studios press release, that’s “the shortest amount of time among all animated MPA releases and all PG-rated films.”
While the achievement isn’t a total surprise (2016’s Zootopia is also a billion-dollar baby, along with quite a few other recent Disney animated films, including Frozen and its sequel and Moana 2), the speed it got there is pretty remarkable. Zootopia 2 can also brag it notched the highest global opening of all time ($559.5 million over five days), “the highest global debut of 2025, and the highest global opening for any animated film in Disney history.”
It’s even filling theaters in China, Ne Zha II‘s home turf. According to the release, Zootopia 2 is “the country’s highest animated opening of all time for a non-local title and the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time, which was achieved in only five days.” It’s already number two on the list of MPA films released in China, behind Avengers: Endgame.
So, all this is to say, expect Zootopia 3 to be announced very soon. Maybe Zootopia 4 too, at this rate.
