With its characters surrounded by new friends, in a whole new universe, the end of Deadpool & Wolverine felt like a new beginning. For Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yes, but also Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. After putting the character to bed with 2017’s Logan, Jackman resurrected the character, physically and literally, for last year’s hit sequel. And now, in a new interview, he has continued to tease fans about what it could all mean.
“It doesn’t feel like the end,” Jackman told Cynthia Erivo as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series. “It really felt like the end after Logan. If I look back, I really needed to claim it as the end. [The] truth [is], because I really believed in some things that I wanted that movie to be, and I had to fight for them. And I think I had to say, ‘This is the last time I’m doing it, and I don’t mind not doing it.’ And we did it.”
“But there were parts of my brain, particularly when I saw Deadpool, that I was like, ‘Ooh.’ I see 48 Hours. I see Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte,” he continued. “But I would shove it down because… I’d told everyone that I was done. I’m not one of those guys [who go back on their word]. Then I went, ‘You know what? I change my mind.’ It’s not that big of a deal. I’m not even gonna say I’m sorry. And it was so awesome.”
Awesome it was. Jackman continued that Deadpool & Wolverine kind of reinvigorated his love of the character, which is another big part of why he doesn’t feel he’s done putting on the claws. “I felt it was different,” he said of the Ryan Reynolds-Shawn Levy collaboration. “I’ve [played Wolverine] 10 times. So I have all this evidence of how I’ve felt, and I’m like, ‘I know this character…’ I think in many ways, I know people love Logan, as do I, but I was like, I see sides of Wolverine that we haven’t seen before.'”
So, when or how will we get to explore those new sides of the character? The most obvious places would be one or both of the upcoming Avengers movies, which should shake up the fabric of the Marvel Cinematic Universe significantly. Or, once those are over by 2028, the next phase of the MCU will focus on the X-Men, so that would be a natural fit as well.
But, also, you have to assume Marvel is likely to recast the character at some point. Deadpool might joke that Jackman will play the character “until he’s 90,” but that won’t be the case. Nevertheless, even though it’s already been 25 years, it’s exciting to think we’ll get to spend at least a little more time with this beloved character.
