It’s almost too perfect that, in Toy Story 5, the thing that might end the toys is the thing that created them in the first place: technology.
The first trailer for the fifth installment in the landmark computer-animated series was just released, and it shows the toys freaking out when a new toy joins the group: a Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee, who was recently in Tron: Ares.
When last we left Buzz, Woody, and the gang, they’d split up, with Woody staying behind as Bonnie left with Buzz, Forky, and the gang. (That was in Toy Story 4, a movie that happened.) We don’t know how or why they all reunite, but we do know they do, and that the modern world is catching up with them.
Which, again, is perfect. Don’t forget that 30 years ago, Toy Story was the first computer-generated animated film, and it basically changed the entire scope of that industry. It went on to have three sequels (so far) and became the gold standard of the Pixar lexicon. But, on the other hand, it pretty much put a huge nail in the coffin of hand-drawn animation too. So that Pixar is making a movie that’s sort of about itself certainly seems interesting.
“It’s been a hilarious and poignant journey exploring how our favorite team of legacy toys might respond to today’s world of technology, and we’re thrilled to share this first glimpse with audiences,” director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E, Finding Nemo) and co-director Kenna Harris (Ciao Alberto) said in a statement. “Having the remarkably talented Greta Lee bring Lilypad to life—balancing a playfully antagonistic tone with humor and heart—has been incredible.”
Lee joins the previously announced Conan O’Brien as a new addition, along with the returning voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, and Tony Hale. Who else is returning? Who else is new? And how will Woody, Buzz, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys deal with modern technology? We’ll find out when Toy Story 5 opens June 19. Here’s the full new poster.
