As Lucasfilm reworks and readjusts what has now become six years of waiting to see Star Wars return to movie theaters after The Rise of Skywalker, one question among many on fans’ lips has been just who, if any, of the sequel trilogy cast might return for more films. While we wait and see just what the hell is going on with the Rey movie, another of the next-gen trio of sequels heroes has weighed in with a much more pertinent stipulation to their return to the galaxy far, far away.
Speaking to GQ Magazine for its ‘Men of the Year’ 2025 series—and reflecting on a casual comment he made to Deadline in 2020 about only returning to Star Wars “if [he] needed another house or something”—Isaac, hot off the heels of his star turn as Victor Frankenstein in Netflix and Guillermo Del Toro’s new adaptation of the classic, discussed what he’d want to consider making a comeback as Poe Dameron.
“That was a real likable quote [to Deadline]. Jesus Christ. Y’know, people ask you things, you say stuff, you don’t really think about it that much,” Isaac said. “I said a slightly dickish thing… I mean, I’d be open to it, although right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great.”
As GQ notes, Isaac’s commentary was particularly pointed for a reason. The interview was conducted just days after the studio had pulled late-night host Jimmy Kimmel off air, surrounding conservative backlash to remarks Kimmel had made about the reaction to the death of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. At the time, Disney weathered a storm of criticism both from consumers and Hollywood stars for its capitulation to the will of the second Trump administration and its most vocal supporters, before reinstating Kimmel almost a week later.
But the Kimmel controversy is hardly the first time Disney has been willing to acquiesce to the Trump administration’s strong-arming since his return to office. Earlier this year, Disney was criticized for complying with Trump executive orders to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, as well as the studio’s repeated acts of self-censorship to erase storylines involving transgender characters across multiple of its subdivisions, in light of Trump’s continued persecution of trans people.
So given their current track record, perhaps it might take a while to see Isaac behind the controls of an X-Wing once again. But considering how difficult it has been for Lucasfilm to get any Star Wars movie projects off the ground (not for the lack of trying, as we saw with the Hunt for Ben Solo stuff recently), let alone ones that pick up on the stories left after the events of the sequel trilogy, maybe that would’ve been the case regardless of his stance on the House of Mouse.
