Star Trek Beyond was, apparently, the final frontier. Almost 10 years have passed since the rebooted, big-screen Star Trek cast was seen in theaters, and in that time, many, many attempts have been made to bring it back. Now though, with Paramount under new leadership, it seems as if the decision has finally been made. Star Trek 4 is dead, and the Enterprise crew will be reborn.
Variety reported the news in a long piece about the new head of Paramount, David Ellison: “The hope is to have a fresh Star Trek movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.” This is different from reports just a few months back that claimed a fourth trip with Pine and crew was on the books, along with an “origins of Starfleet” movie that we first became aware of way back in January 2024.
Whether or not that film, which Andor director Toby Haynes was attached to direct from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith and Simon Kinberg, with J.J. Abrams producing, is still on the cards is unclear. But what is clear is that, since that film doesn’t feature the cast that we first saw in Abrams’ 2009 film, it’s probably got a better shot at happening. io9 has reached out to Paramount for comment or clarification and will update this story if or when we hear back.
And while this is probably the right move after a near 10-year hiatus following two sequels, Into Darkness and Beyond, of diminishing returns, it’s also sad for fans of that cast. It was, and is, a great cast, and their adventures still feel incomplete somehow. Thankfully, though, this is Star Trek, and as we’ve seen before, multiple timelines, realities, and more mean anything is possible in the future. Just not, it seems, the immediate future.
Is the world ready for a fully new recast Enterprise crew? Or do you think we’ll go with something completely out of left field? Let us know below.
