Reading time: Reading time 2 minutes
One of the greatest, scariest, and most unforgettable horror movies of all time is coming to IMAX. That’s the good news. The bad news is, it’s not coming out when you’d expect. Basically, all IMAX and no Halloween makes Jack a dull boy.
IMAX just announced that, yes, for the first time ever, it’s bringing the iconic Stanley Kubrick film The Shining to its large-screen theaters. And, with the news of the release coming in October, thoughts immediately go to spending Halloween in the theater with Jack Torrance and the fam.
Unfortunately, The Shining won’t be in theaters this weekend, though. It’s coming to IMAX on December 12. Not quite spooky season, but at least it’s potentially getting buried in a blizzard season. Just like Jack, Wendy, and Danny in the Overlook Hotel. Here’s the announcement trailer.
Tickets are not yet on sale, but you can check out the official landing page to sign up for updates. As for other updates, such as when that might happen and what specifically, if anything, has been remastered for the release, io9 reached out to IMAX, which does not yet have that information.
Considering the iconic filmmaker passed away over 25 years ago, though, we can safely assume not much will change with the release. It’ll probably just be the film, in whatever its best, current, theatrical format is, projected on the biggest screens around. Which is awesome on its own. Most of us have seen The Shining, but only a few of us have seen it on the big screen, and no one has ever seen it in IMAX.
As for why this is happening in December, we can only look at the IMAX release schedule to speculate. In terms of first-run films, IMAX has Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 in late November and Avatar: Fire and Ash on December 19, which really means like December 17 or 18. So, there’s a tiny window for an all-time classic to squeeze its head into. And while it won’t be Halloween, it may still be cold in December. Don’t get stuck in the hedge maze on the way out.
