Move Over ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ ‘Sinners’ Is Back in Theaters This Halloween Too

reading time 1 minute

Sinners was a hit right out of the gate, racking up critical acclaim and huge box-office returns. The demand for Ryan Coogler’s vampire tale saw it return to IMAX theaters not long after its initial run, and it kept playing on big screens even when its home release arrived. Now it’s taking a cue from another of the year’s biggest hits—Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters—and returning to theaters for Halloween.

The comparisons are a bit different, of course; KPop Demon Hunters is a Netflix movie that got elevated to theaters out of sheer popular demand, which also propelled its spooky season return (costumes and singing along encouraged).

But you have to assume both movies are also setting their sights on the upcoming awards season; Sinners in particular, which bowed in the spring, will want to remind voters how powerful it is—especially when witnessed on an IMAX screen.

It seems very likely to be a Best Picture nominee, despite the Oscars’ much-noted bias against horror movies, along with getting recognition in other top categories; Coogler is, after all, the director behind Black Panther, which proved Marvel movies could be bona fide Academy Awards contenders beyond just the special effects categories.

Variety noted Sinners‘ theatrical return will be coming to “select IMAX theaters” the week of October 30-November 5. If you got in on those official Sinners Spirit Halloween costumes, you already know what to wear when you show up to the theater, no invitation necessary.
